How it all started.


I didnt start out intending to be a teacher. In fact, I started an engineering career in the Royal Navy, with hopes of being an Admiral by the time I was thirty. I never did rise through the ranks that far, although I did learn a little about maths, physics and tying knots along the way. It was almost by accident that I discovered I had a talent for working with students and that ultimatly lead me back to university to fully qualify as a teacher. Having taught in the public sector for a number of years, in early 2011 I decided to strike out on my own and founded Grainger Tuition to capatalise on my skills in one-to-one teaching.

I have a BSc degree in Science and Technology having studied various science based modules including, Maths, Physics, Astronomy and Electronics and I also hold a Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) awared by Huddersfield University and I am registered as a qualified teacher (QTLS) with a recent DBS check.

A good understanding of maths and physics is built step by step with each new step resting firmly on those below. If a few steps are weak or missing altogether then a student can find themselves struggling to make any further progress. As evidenced by many succesful students, I have almost infinite patience and a supportive approach that enables students to identify and fill those missing gaps to allow them to reach their full potential

When not actually planning, preparing or delivering sessions you may find me reading. Often it is books on maths or physics but the odd novel does sneak in occasionally. Failing that, I do enjoy a good movie but, weather permitting, you are most likely to find me wandering the Dales or Northumberland coast with my dog 'Wolfie'.
